Le narrateur de ce livre est Itzig Finkelstein. Mais cet Itzig Finkelstein n'est pas le vrai Itzig Finkelstein. Le vrai est mort. Celui qui nous parle est Max Schulz, le génocidaire qui a abattu le vrai Itzig Finkelstein et ses parents en camp de concentration.

Les jeunes Max et Itzig étaient amis avant 1933, habitant la même rue à Wieshalle en Allemagne, travaillant dans le même salon de coiffure, celui de Chaïm Finkelstein, le père d'Itzig. L'un juif, l'autre non mais ressemblant à un juif. Et puis, l'arrivée d'Hitler au pouvoir change tout. Et les amis d'hier ...

Ce n'est que le début du parcours de Schulz. Il y aura la Pologne après le camp de concentration, un retour en Allemagne et finalement la "terre promise".

Si je ne disais que ça, je ne dirais rien. Vous ne sauriez pas le grotesque, l'absurde, l'humour très noir qui font clairement la force de ce livre.

Edgar Hilsenrath était allemand, juif et c'est chez l'éditeur américain qui avait publié son premier roman censuré en Allemagne, Nuit, qu'il fait paraître en 1971 Le nazi et le barbier ... en allemand. Dans son propre pays, il sortira en 1977 et subira les foudres de la critique selon laquelle on ne peut pas parler des Juifs comme cela, avec ironie et férocité.
